Talk It Over by Grayson Hugh: The Blue-Eyed Soul Hit from Blind to Reason

Grayson Hugh’s “Talk It Over” arrived in 1988 on RCA Records as the best-known track from his major-label debut, Blind to Reason. The album came out in September 1988, and Hugh describes the song on his own site as his international hit. AllMusic reports that the single reached the pop Top 20 and that both the single and the album went gold.

The song is a ballad about a quarrel between lovers. One partner is sorry and hopes the couple can repair things by sitting down together instead of letting pride end the relationship. It has a pleading, gospel-flavored tone, and Hugh’s voice carries the emotion.

Where the song came from

Hugh did not write “Talk It Over”. It is credited to Sandy Linzer and Irwin Levine, a songwriting team whose work was already well established in pop. Hugh arranged the song and gave it its soul-leaning character. He is a singer, pianist and Hammond organ player, so the performance shows an interpreter shaping someone else’s material.

Hugh’s route to a record deal was unusual. He moved to New York City in 1986 and met the producer Michael Baker there. Baker was finishing an album for RCA by The Blow Monkeys, and Hugh was hired to sing backing vocals on it. He signed to RCA as a singer-songwriter in 1987.

The recording and its release

“Talk It Over” is the third track on Blind to Reason. On the artist’s own account of the album, Hugh played guitar and electric sitar on this song. The single was pressed in many countries, with US, UK, German, Canadian, Australian and Japanese editions listed for 1988. The B-side was “Empty as the Wind”. A music video followed, and the song also appeared in Hugh’s TV appearances. He later recalled being invited to perform it on the Today show in the fall of 1989, when it was in the Billboard Top 20.

AllMusic’s Thom Jurek says the album was closer to gritty, gospel-tinged soul than almost anything else being recorded at the time. He also says the single brought Hugh’s singing, which draws on soul, gospel, country, blues and old-school R&B, to a much larger audience.

What came next

The album also produced “Bring It All Back”. Hugh’s remake of Champaign’s 1981 hit “How ‘Bout Us” followed in 1990 as a duet with the soul singer Betty Wright, who died some years later. Hugh calls her “the late great Betty Wright” on his site. He kept working as a songwriter, pianist and organist, and he performed in Poland in 2012.

“Talk It Over” has stayed his signature song. It appeared on compilations such as Real 80’s: The Video Hits in 2003 and The Essential Eighties 1985-1989 in 2005, which keep it in the company of other late-1980s pop hits. The song is still the easiest way into his catalog. Anyone who likes it should go on to the rest of Blind to Reason.
