Adamo’s breakthrough: “Sans toi ma mie” and “Tombe la neige” (1963)

Adamo’s career began on February 14, 1960. That day he won the Paris final of a Radio Luxembourg competition, singing “Si j’osais,” a song he had written himself.

His first big hit was “Sans toi ma mie” in 1963. “Tombe la neige” followed the same year and became his signature song. In 1964, “Vous permettez, Monsieur?” and “Quand les Roses” were also hits.

Adamo sang his songs in many languages, including Italian, Spanish, German, Dutch, Japanese, English and Turkish. That helped him reach listeners far beyond the French-speaking world. “Petit bonheur,” which he wrote himself, had sold over a million copies by April 1970 and earned a gold disc.

Adamo’s revival: Zanzibar with Arno (2003)

Adamo’s career slowed in the 1980s, when his style of music fell out of fashion. In 1993, his popularity in Belgium rose sharply after Arno recorded his own version of “Les Filles du Bord de Mer.” That same year Adamo became an honorary UNICEF ambassador for Belgium.

He kept releasing albums through the 1990s. Rêveur de fond came out in 1992, La vie comme elle passe in 1995 and Regards in 1997. Regards dealt with war and with people pushed to the margins of society.

In 2003 he made the album Zanzibar together with his friend Arno. The live CD and DVD Un soir au Zanzibar followed in 2004, and La part de l’ange in 2007. Adamo has also acted in a few French-language films, appearing as himself in Lili David (2012) and Les Chamois (2017).

Adamo’s recent albums: In French Please! (2023) and Des nèfles et des groseilles (2025)

In 2023, Adamo released In French Please!, an album of popular English-language songs sung in French, including songs by Elton John and Pearl Jam. He also planned a 2023 concert tour to mark 60 years in music. After problems with his vocal cords, he returned to the stage and recorded Des nèfles et des groseilles, released on November 14, 2025.
